This is the kind of exhibit you'll want to spend hours enjoying: The Newark Public Library will showcase original photos, iconic photo-books and select photo journals from the late 19th century to the present day. The exhibit is called Photographic Books and Prints from the Special Collections of the Newark Public Library, and is on view from January 20 through March 20.

It's quite an archive on display here: rare issues of Camera Work; a portfolio of 20 photogravures by Paul Strand and original photographs and photo-books by Diane Arbus, Margaret Bourke-White, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Roy DeCarava, Elliott Erwitt, Robert Frank, Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Edwin Hale Lincoln, Gordon Parks, Sebastiao Salgado, Weegee and others.

Jeremy Cowart is a professional artist in Nashville, Tennessee, who has photographed rock stars such as Sting and Britney Spears. But on Saturday, he turned his lens on people unlikely to be recognized by anyone but family.

Cowart staged a one-day, worldwide photo shoot called Help Portrait.

"We just want to show people that they are beautiful, that they are valued," Cowart told CNN.

Cowart used the Internet months ago to spread his idea: shoot everyday people, especially the disadvantaged, the homeless, people down on their luck and struggling families. He wanted to make them feel special.

The National Press Photographers Association's general legal counsel has sent a letter to Amtrak officials asking that railroad "take immediate steps to remedy the railroad's unconstitutional treatment of law-abiding photographers."

The action came after NPPA received complaints over the last few months from photographers who were told by Amtrak police officers that they were not permitted to take photographs of trains or stations. In some instances photographers were threatened with arrest or arrested when they failed to follow officers' commands to delete images.

The issue is likely to be tested in the coming weeks as thousands of media and tourists flood through Union Station in Washington, DC, for the upcoming presidential inaugural.

A church and small businesses are just some of those accusing picture agencies of using heavy-handed tactics when pursuing payment.

The perennial tale about church fundraising is that it's to rebuild the steeple. But one church in Lichfield, Staffordshire, faced a different fundraising problem: to pay a £6,000 bill demanded for photographs used on its website. The case came to the attention of Gavin Drake, the communications director for the diocese's 600 churches. In creating the church's website, a volunteer had included a couple of images sourced from Getty, a large picture agency, without paying for them. A couple of months later, Getty sent the church a demand for £6,000.

State officials hope to persuade a judge in Morristown this week to approve a proposal to distribute photographs and videos to nearly 1,700 brides and grooms left without wedding mementoes when Celebration Studios abruptly closed in January.

The state Division of Consumer Affairs in January filed a consumer fraud action against now-defunct Chester-based Celebration Studios, and got court orders to freeze its assets and impound wedding film, videos and DVDs for which couples contracted but never received. Most of the materials are in the form of unedited film footage, officials said.

Like a number of people without a ticket to the Nationals' game Sunday, Mark Butler stood outside the left field gate and watched some of the historic event from a distance. The Minnesota man carried a digital camera to capture the memories. For a member of the Uniformed Division of United States Secret Service, Butler captured too much.

9NEWS NOW photographer Greg Guise was rolling when an officer approached Mark Butler. Butler said the officer demanded he delete any pictures that showed the security checkpoints set up to screen fans for the visit by President George Bush.

"It's kind of like not being in America," Butler said. Butler said he was not interested in the security but in the part of the stadium you could see beyond the gate.

Two men were released from police custody this morning after they took photos of Picatinny Arsenal Sunday afternoon, an incident that led to Route 15 in Morris County being shut for three hours last night.

Route 15 was closed in case there was "something hazardous in the vehicle," Phillips said.

The men told authorities a friend who grew up in the area asked them to take pictures to see how the area had changed, Phillips said.

"They looked at the laptop to see if there is anything suspicious," Phillips said. "Everything they told police checked out."

I'm in Las Vegas this week for the annual PMA conference and trade show. I've been here for a few days already, and there's one topic that has come up in almost every discussion I've had with photographers: Aperture.

More specifically, the topic is: "Where's Version 2.0 of Apple's image management and editing app?" With the the show starting this morning, it seems pretty clear that we won't see anything announced this week, and the disappointment I'm hearing is pervasive.

I hate to admit it, but the main reason I bought a D300 in the first place is because of the bigger LCD screen on the back. I know that sounds silly, but it's true (I had only actually held a D300 once; at Photoshop World, and then only for about three minutes. I spent much more time with the D3, as I actually got to shoot with it on location in Montana). Of course, I tried to justify the purchase by telling myself that there were other new features, but basically in my mind it was a D200, with a bigger screen and a few new bells and whistles, so I ordered it. Here's the thing; I was wrong. Way wrong. The D300 is MUCH more camera than I was giving it credit for.

he New York Civil Liberties Union sued the police department Thursday in an attempt to stop its officers from detaining and questioning photographers and filmmakers who take pictures of city landmarks.

The suit was filed on behalf of Arun Wiita, a 26-year-old graduate student at Columbia University who the NYCLU said was handcuffed in July after an officer spotted him photographing a Manhattan subway station.

A variety of shots posted at one Web site and another show some interesting new features of an SLR higher up the line than the E-510 and E-410 introduced earlier this year.

The pictures label the camera as the E-3. That's a different name from an anonymously posted document that used the name E-P1, but it's unclear what the naming implications are. On January 6, 2006, Henan Province's Dahe Daily newspaper reported that the local police department was unable to take an ID photo of Ye Xiangting from Yelou Village in the Yangzhuang Township of Wugang City, Henan Province. No image of Ye Xiangting showed up in the computer photos, and there is still no clear explanation for the result.
