Jeremy Cowart is a professional artist in Nashville, Tennessee, who has photographed rock stars such as Sting and Britney Spears. But on Saturday, he turned his lens on people unlikely to be recognized by anyone but family.

Cowart staged a one-day, worldwide photo shoot called Help Portrait.

"We just want to show people that they are beautiful, that they are valued," Cowart told CNN.

Cowart used the Internet months ago to spread his idea: shoot everyday people, especially the disadvantaged, the homeless, people down on their luck and struggling families. He wanted to make them feel special.

It has been 15 years since Marc Andreessen developed the Netscape Internet browser that introduced millions of people to the Internet.

After its early success, Netscape was roundly defeated by Microsoft in the so-called browser wars of the 1990s that dominated the Web's first chapter.

Mr. Andreessen appears to want a rematch. Now a prominent Silicon Valley financier, Mr. Andreessen is backing a start-up called RockMelt, staffed with some of his close associates, that is building a new Internet browser, according to people with knowledge of his investment.

The state Supreme Court ruled today that under the New Jersey Constitution an Internet user has the right to privacy in the subscriber information maintained by the individual's Internet service provider.

Ruling in the case of Shirley Reid, a Cape May County woman who was charged with hacking into her employer's computer system after police obtained her identity from Comcast by using a municipal court subpoena, the high court unanimously held law enforcement had the right to investigate her but should have, instead, used a grand jury subpoena.

Despite a letter with the Dover mayor's signature on it accepting an offer to translate parts of the town's website into Spanish, Mayor James Dodd now says he is still opposed to the idea.

In a statement, Dodd said Tuesday night that he is "refusing to create a bilingual town website," and that the letter sent to the Rev. Daniel Martinez, who had offered translation service for free, does not express his true sentiments.

A fascinating thing has happened in the world of JavaScript DOM traversal: Over the course of a couple months in 2007 three of the major JavaScript libraries (Prototype, Dojo, and Mootools) all switched their CSS selector engines to using the browser's native XPath functionality, rather than doing traditional DOM traversal. What's interesting about this is that the burden of functionality and performance has, literally, flipped overnight on to the browser's XPath engine, from its pure DOM implementation.

Yahoo! Inc., a leading global Internet company, today announced its support for the OpenID 2.0 digital identity framework for all 248 million active registered Yahoo! users worldwide. OpenID, an open framework based on proven Internet technologies, enables users to consolidate their Internet identity, eliminating the need to create separate IDs and logins at all of the various websites, blogs, and profile pages they may visit in the course of their online session. In addition to the many leading Yahoo! services users already enjoy, anyone with a Yahoo! ID will be able to use the same ID for easy access to any sites that support OpenID 2.0.

A small New York-based social media start-up called FindMeOn intends to send Google a letter asking that it change the name of its OpenSocial initiative, CNET News.com has learned. FindMeOn founded a project called OpenSN (Open Social Networking) in 2006, and according to founder and CEO Jonathan Vanasco, the similarity of its name to Google's newer project is getting in the way of business.

Several years ago, when Mac OS X was still a very young operating system, it was hard to find a really good and stable web browser for the Mac. Pretty much the only viable option for the first release of Mac OS X in 2001 was Internet Explorer 5.

I wanted something better than IE, so as soon as it would run natively on Mac OS X I switched to Mozilla. I don't remember exactly when and which version of Mozilla I used, but I think it was before Mozilla 1.0 was released, so in late 2001 or early 2002. It was a bit shaky, but it was still better and faster than IE. And IE and Mozilla were the only real options you had back then, unless you wanted to run a web browser in Classic mode (Mac OS 9 emulation).

Today, in late 2007, things are different. Very different. Mac OS X users have a large number of excellent, standards compliant browsers to choose from. And Internet Explorer is no longer an option, since it has been discontinued and is no longer available for download from Microsoft. Internet Explorer 5 for the Mac was once a great browser, but the rest have caught up and surpassed it years ago. I don't think there are many who miss it.

Because of the slow entry into the digital realm of Viacom, Comedy Central's parent, and an almost crippling deal point in Mr. Stone's and Mr. Parker's contract, the lewd, rude, crudely animated and mordantly funny series — one that began with a viral video before the term even existed — has barely had a presence as an avalanche of user-generated entertainment hit the Web. Meanwhile, sites like YouTube met the demand for free "South Park" clips without paying for the privilege.

Now, however, Mr. Stone and Mr. Parker and their bosses at Comedy Central, a unit of Viacom's MTV Networks, are attempting to leapfrog to the vanguard of Hollywood's transition into Web. In a joint venture that involves millions in up-front cash and a 50-50 split of ad revenues, the network and the two creative partners have agreed to create a hub to spread "South Park"-related material across the Net, mobile platforms, and video games.

The National Hockey League (NHL) will offer free hockey programming to consumers on the Joost distribution platform beginning at the start of the 2007 Stanley Cup Final. The announcement was made today by Joost™, the world's first broadcast-quality Internet television service.

Under the agreement, the NHL will provide full-game replays on a delay and highlights from this year's Stanley Cup Playoffs, combined with a rich selection of vintage games from the NHL archives. Some of the historic action available includes: game 7 of the 1994 Stanley Cup Final in which the New York Rangers defeated the Vancouver Canucks; game 7 of the 1993 Western Conference Final game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Los Angeles Kings featuring Wayne Gretzky; and the ultimate game of the 1997 Stanley Cup Final, in which the Detroit Red Wings topped the Philadelphia Flyers.

Feeling the heat, Assemblyman Peter Biondi (R-Somerset) said yesterday he is thinking hard about withdrawing a bill he introduced to limit anonymous speech on the Internet.

Millions of parents around the country rely on Web filtering software to shield their children from the nasty side of the Internet--porn, predators and other unseemly phenomena. But according to the U.S. Justice Department, Web filters are not enough to protect minors. The agency voiced its concern about the technology this week as it geared up to defend an antiporn law that's under attack from civil liberties advocates.
