Union County hiker missing in the Great Swamp

A Union County man remains missing tonight after he wandered off a trail in the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge earlier in the evening, officials said.

With overnight temperatures dipping into the lower 30s with patchy frost, Chatham Township Mayor Kevin Tubbs said rescuers are concerned for the man's health and safety, noting the hiker was unlikely to have brought much equipment.

No offense to the guy, b/c I'm sure he spent a very cold, lonely night...but I used to live literally on the edge of the Great Swamp in Chatham and couldn't get lost if I had tried. If he walks in one direction, even if he's in the middle of the Swamp, he'll hit a house in an hour...if he's not in the very middle, he could walk a few minutes and hit civilization. The Great Swamp is usually full of hikers and people walking and looking at wildlife with their toddlers. It's not like getting lost in the Rockies!

Anyway, I'm sure they'll find him this morning.

I admit, it be pretty hard, but not all that impossible. It isn't like getting lost in the rockies, and it may be 'harder' to get lost while its fairly dry as it is this time of year, but I can see getting disoriented in parts of the park and losing direction as you come up to water and not ending up walking in a straight line in any direction and just wandering around and finding uncrossable areas or dead ends. Add to that just the nature of it getting dark and not being sure which direction is the best way out and which is going to take you a good walk to get out will have an impact.

Some parks in the area are small enough that you can easily walk in any direction and hit a major road in under an hour [south mountain, eagle rock], but I can see folks getting disoriented in the great swap/stirling park or the wrong parts of watchung.
