The Edmonton Oilers have made a huge splash in the restricted free agent pool. Sources tell TSN that the team has signed forward Thomas Vanek to a seven-year, $50 million offer sheet, a signing that carries a price tag of four first round picks as compensation to the Buffalo Sabres if the team chooses not to retain him.

DAMN! That's a huge contract. No way Buffalo matches that. Take the draft picks and call it a day. Go to the finals in a few years with a better overall team.

Not a big surprise.. they couldn't really afford to lose much more. That said, slick move on Edmonton's part for forcing their hand. [though I'm sure someone's gonna complain that touching RFAs is a big faux pas]
