National Hockey League partners with Joost

advertisement

The National Hockey League (NHL) will offer free hockey programming to consumers on the Joost distribution platform beginning at the start of the 2007 Stanley Cup Final. The announcement was made today by Joostâ„¢, the world's first broadcast-quality Internet television service.

Under the agreement, the NHL will provide full-game replays on a delay and highlights from this year's Stanley Cup Playoffs, combined with a rich selection of vintage games from the NHL archives. Some of the historic action available includes: game 7 of the 1994 Stanley Cup Final in which the New York Rangers defeated the Vancouver Canucks; game 7 of the 1993 Western Conference Final game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Los Angeles Kings featuring Wayne Gretzky; and the ultimate game of the 1997 Stanley Cup Final, in which the Detroit Red Wings topped the Philadelphia Flyers.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

For all the grief the NHL (justifiably) gets for their US TV deal with Versus, NHL's new media division actually deserves a lot of credit. Between this deal and their existing deal with Google Video, they are getting hockey out there for an interested international audience.

They're making deals, but in typical NHL fashion I'm a bit disappointed in the highlight packages that get distributed. Some of the crucial plays in recent games have been let out - most notably for me the no goal call in the Rangers playoff series against Buffalo in game 3 - I was at the game and wanted to catch it to see a better view the the jumbo vision replay but it was conveniently left out. Showing all the goals is great, but I can watch sportscenter if all i want to see are a handful of super goals.

Asking any Leaf fan to watch that game again is cruelty of the highest order. I feel a little sick just thinking about it.
