Fedoruk: Let fighters wear gloves

advertisement

The NHL should take a page from the UFC when it comes to fighting, says in-the-spotlight Flyers enforcer Todd Fedoruk.

Fedoruk, who spent the night in hospital earlier this week after being at the wrong end of a nasty knockout, says maybe NHL tough guys should wear padding on their hands under their gloves.

"You look at extreme fighting, they've got those four-ounce gloves on," Fedoruk said.

Such padding would lessen the blows, he argued.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

This guy is such a goon. Maybe he just got hit in the head too often.

I agree with him that fighting in hockey is part of the game -- one I don't want to see messed with -- but the league will never go in the direction of letting people wear any non-hockey related equipment whose sole purpose is it aid in fighting.

Not the least of the problems with his suggestion is what to do when someone with 'gloves' or wrapped hands goes after someone without. Though there are people who tend to be on the ice to throw their bodies around more then to score fighting isn't something that is exclusive to "non-skilled" players. Shanny going to lace then up every game for the one or two fights he might get into in a season? Though Emery might look at the idea with a big smile, I'm sure he wouldn't wear anything under his catching glove either.

Bottom line is that there is room for hockey in the sport, any competitive team will tell you there isn't room for a player who is on the ice to throw down more then they are to impact the game and its momentum in other ways.

Can't wait for the rematch of the rematch against the Rangers.
