Versus will debut the "Rail Cam" during Monday nights game. Although there have been some experiments with Rail Cam in other hockey telecasts—previously during the nationally televised Frozen Four, a college level hockey tournament—this is the first time that the camera is being used extensively in a nationally televised NHL game in the U.S. It is also the first time that the Rail Cam has been used in native high-definition. Recent improvements to the Rail Cam provide better and smoother-moving shots than ever before.
I wonder how much it'll suck and if it'll live up to the high *cough* bar set by other innovations in televised hockey such as Fox's glowing puck.
So I'm watching the game on and off tonight...
Grade for the new toy in its first NHL game: D
Its seemed a bit glitchy at times and really quite shaky. I think, however, much of the problem is that versus is turning to it way too much and the controller probably dosn't have enough experience to know when not to zoom, pan, etc. At this point I'd have to say the broadcasters should save it for replays, face offs and a few other situations.
What I don't think can be overcome with better direction and cameramen:
- its just too close to the action to get a good shot of coast to coast action without causing whiplash or getting ahead/behind.
- forget about it if the action goes to the near boards and play goes "under" it.
But I wouldn't call it a total gimmick or call for its head as long as its use is cut back on.
Wonder how people in the stands find the contraption flying around all game.
